Welcome to dinosaur land. A land populated by creatures fierce and wild… 🙂
To set up this dinosaur-themed “sensory world”, fill a large shallow tub with sand (I used an underbed storage tub), then scoop out a depression and sink in a smaller container down to its rim. I used a kidney-shaped tub leftover from our last play table that disintegrated, but any sort of medium-sized plastic container will do.
Fill this smaller tub with water, then add some rocks, some greenery snipped from your garden to make “trees”…
… and of course… some dinosaurs.
This type of set-up functions as an “invitation to play.” You’ve set the scene and provided the ingredients for independent play – now it’s time to beckon your kids over and let their imaginations take hold.
The thing I love about setting up a sensory tub is that they take minutes to put together, but are so new and exciting to the kids. Because it’s not something that’s left “out” all the time, the novelty factor is huge.
If you’d like to see some of my other “sensory worlds”, check out my ocean rockpool and sand play table zoo. I hope these spark lots of creative ideas for miniature worlds you can put together for your kids!
Until next time,
