My parents’ beach house is SO close to being finished… and it just gets more and more beautiful every day. I’m so pleased with how everything is coming together!
If you missed any previous posts about this house and want to catch up, you can find out the full story of my parents’ new home (and why I’m personally so thrilled about it) and see the kitchen mood board I put together here.
The mirrors, lights and tapware went into the bathrooms today, so I thought it would be a good time to walk you through our ideas for this space. I’ll also give you a sneak peek of how it’s all coming together – I couldn’t be happier with it!
When you’re decorating, it’s a good idea to start with a mood board. It’s an easy way to see how everything is going to look together – which removes a lot of the guesswork and will help you make confident decisions. Here’s the mood board I put together for this bathroom:
The hero piece of the bathrooms is definitely the patterned floor tile. That was the first thing we chose, so it became our jumping-off point for the whole design. It’s a beautiful soft taupe, and it feels very up-to-the-minute, while also having a lovely classic feel.
The vanity cupboards all match the kitchen, with Shaker profile doors and white quartz benchtops. The handles haven’t been installed yet, but there will be black knobs on the cupboards and black cup pulls on the drawers.
This mood board specifically references the main bathroom with its feature mirrors and wall lights, but all the other selections carry over to the ensuite as well. This is a progress shot from the ensuite so you can see how the tiles and cabinetry look together…
I apologise for the poor quality of all these pictures, btw – I actually remembered to bring my proper camera to the house this week, then realised when I was there that I’d taken the battery out to charge it. Oops. Although they’re all a bit grainy and poorly lit, hopefully it gives you an idea of where we’re headed.
The wall tiles are hard to appreciate in a flat mood board rendering or iPhone snap, but in person they are beautifully textured, with an uneven surface that mimics the imperfect look of hand-made clay tiles.
We chose to lay the subway tiles in a traditional brick bond pattern. Our decision to use white grout means the uneven texture of the tiles is the hero, rather than the grid pattern of the grout lines. The tiles are laid floor to ceiling, so it was important not to overwhelm the space with an overly busy effect (especially considering the amount of pattern on the floor already.)
Just ignore the dirty floors – these are all mid-construction snaps.
Here’s the ensuite again, this time with some black fixtures in place. We’re having a black-framed mirror custom made for this area, as it was hard to source something exactly the right size.
So, back to the main bathroom, which is what our mood board is all about.
We chose to wall-mount the main bathroom vanity so that it floats above the floor. This gives the vanity a contemporary twist, which was important to us. Throughout the whole house, we’re going for a modern classic look with a coastal Hamptons vibe. The trick is to incorporate classic elements without making the whole thing look like a farmhouse. Using simple modern lines for the tapware and floating the vanity helps to achieve that contemporary balance.
It also makes it really easy to clean underneath the vanity, and helps the room feel bigger – because the tiles continue beneath the vanity instead of being visually cut off.
The main bathroom is a three-way design, so the bathroom, toilet and vanity area are all separate, and the vanity area is open-concept. Here’s a reminder of the floor plan:
This means guests walk right past the open vanity on their way down the hallway to get to the living area. So we wanted to make this zone a real statement.
I really wanted a pair of feature mirrors with some “wow” factor, so I was thrilled when I found these beauties. Flanked by black wall sconces, it’s the perfect blend of modern and classic.
I’m so excited to see it all coming together! It’s just as beautiful as I’d imagined it would be.
