Many thanks to The Wall Sticker Company for providing product for this big girl bedroom makeover. All opinions are my own. You can view my full Disclosure statement here.
If you have a REALLY good memory, you may recall me sharing my initial concept for my daughter’s bedroom makeover last year. The original mood board I came up with is below:
Well, I stalled out at the mood board stage and the bedroom makeover never happened. Something about it just really wasn’t clicking for me.
After a lot of thought (and a lot of time spent turning this over in my busy and distracted brain), I figured out where I had gone wrong… and why I just wasn’t getting excited about this room plan.
It was the wallpaper!
When I put together my original mood board, I will confess, I was trying to follow a trend. (Never a good idea.) The black-and-white “Scandi” style is EVERYWHERE right now in Aussie kids’ bedrooms, and I do really like how clean and minimal and funky it looks when done well. So I chose a black and white minimal-style wallpaper that looks fresh, edgy, and bang-on-trend.
The problem is, I am a girl who loves texture, and soft layers, and pretty patterns. And in a girl’s room, what better place to celebrate all of that?
No wonder this room concept just wasn’t sitting right with me. I even spent ages searching for a beautiful Kantha quilt to bring in some of the pattern and texture I was craving deep down. But none of it really gelled together for me.
And who knows that when your concept doesn’t make you all that excited, it’s hard to get motivated to pull off the makeover?!
Look, I could’ve just run with it, and I have no doubt it would have looked great. It certainly would have been a VAST improvement on what we currently have, which is this:
… but it just wasn’t getting me excited, folks. So it never happened.
In the end I went back to the drawing board and started my wallpaper hunt all over again. This time I made sure to search for REMOVABLE wallpaper, since we are not going to be in this house forever. (Another little niggle that was holding me back from making any big, permanent changes.)
When I stumbled across peel-n-stick removable wallpaper, I was instantly hooked. What – no more mixing up buckets of gloopy wallpaper adhesive and painting it onto the wall with a paint roller?! You seriously just peel off the backing and stick it straight onto the wall…?!
MIND. BLOWN.
Oh boy, my excitement for this project was starting to build again for sure.
Still, I was finding it difficult to bring my chosen colour palette to life. I had in mind a palette of pink, coral and a hint of navy, inspired by this GORGEOUS original lino print gifted to me by an artist friend:
I had the piece professionally framed with a floating mount to show off the beautiful texture of that ragged-edged artist’s paper. I adore the hand made feel.
I mean, just take a closer look at these beautiful details…
Needless to say, this stunning artwork was going to be the centrepiece of the room; and I wanted it to shine. So my whole colour palette was drawn from it.
Problem being, it is really, really hard to find coral coloured wallpaper. I already had a pink quilt and a pink rug: I couldn’t do pink wallpaper as well.
So, after countless hours of searching and pinning, and many, MANY dead ends… I’m sure you can only imagine how serendipitous it was when I discovered The Wall Sticker Company.
Not only do they make peel-n-stick, removable wallpaper (my holy grail!!)…. they also allow you to completely customise your colours, at no extra charge.
Wait… what?!
Oh yes, folks. I fell in love with a beautiful Aztec design which has all the soft, pretty texture my girly heart could desire (while also being right on trend – boom!) and I asked to see it in a soft coral colour.
The company actually emails out proofs of your design (for free!), so you can visualise EXACTLY how it will look before you pull the trigger. (How awesome is that?!)
I asked to see a couple of shade variations, including a tone-on-tone option with a darker coral against a light apricot. But in the end, I settled on THIS soft apricot against a fresh white background.
And the angels sang.
Guys. It was PERFECT. Suddenly, my mood board came together all over again, and this time, I FELL IN LOVE HARD.
All the edginess was gone, and in its place was a soft, pretty, girly room I actually loved. And I know my daughter will love her new “big girl bedroom” too.
Time to shop for the last few details to pull this baby together.
Thanks to a Pillow Talk closing-down sale in which everything was 70-80% off, I scored a beautiful pink linen doona cover for like $20, a proper side table that was marked down from $149 to $40, and a golden pineapple lamp down from $99 to about $15 (because – gold, and because – pineapple! Hello!)
I also grabbed the most gorgeous floral Euro cushion in the history of ever, plus some sweet pillowcases with a gorgeous quilted pattern that will bring another layer of texture and femininity to the room. (And because the old pillow sham has been “decorated” since purchase with some abstract felt pen designs. #toddlerproblems) The final step was to pick up a new curtain rod and a pair of sheer white curtains.
Everything I got was on sale, apart from the curtains. Once I had my artwork + wallpaper combo sorted, it was amazing how fast everything else came together. I am truly in love with this room concept now and I can’t wait to pull it off!
So guess what’s even more exciting? I’ll be completing the entire room makeover in just ONE DAY this week! Why only one day? Because:
- It’s school holidays and I only have one kid-free day, and PLUS
- I’ve organised a professional video shoot of the makeover, so you will get to see the actual process of the room being transformed! (Well, an edited and speeded up version, anyway!) How fun, right?!
While the big room reveal won’t be ready to share until the video editing is complete, I’ll be sure to share some sneak peeks on my Instastories this week… so make sure you follow along on Instagram if you’re not already!
I want to give a big thanks and massive shout out to the wonderful Wall Sticker Company for providing the wallpaper for this makeover. They have SO many gorgeous designs, and the ability to completely customise a design to your colour scheme sets them apart from ANY wallpaper company I have yet seen! Not to mention – peel-n-stick, baby! There will be no going back from here!
Stay tuned, friends! I can’t wait to share the big reveal with you!
