In my last post I promised an update about our master bedroom refresh! If you missed it, we’ve just upgraded to a new King-sized bed and new mattress. So I thought it was high time to do a bit of re-styling in this space!
Last you saw, it looked like this:
As you can tell, I like the colour aqua. Ha! This was the first time I’d truly indulged myself by decorating an entire room in the shade.
I liked the bedroom this way, although I was never in love with the bed itself. It wasn’t my choice – we just inherited it with the house and made it work.
Having said that, I was ready for a bit of a change. Our bedroom wasn’t feeling all that fresh anymore. I guess that happens after a few years. It was also starting to feel a little bit too matchy-matchy to me; even a little bit fussy.
I wanted the room to feel a bit more grown-up and sophisticated, with a more relaxed, serene, beachy vibe.
With a few minor adjustments, this is where we landed! Our new Boho beachy bedroom.
Of course, the new bed was a huge change in and of itself! It’s a French Oak four-poster. I absolutely love the clean, pared-back lines.
Now… before you ask… I’m not going to link to the company I purchased it from. This purchase triggered a 6-month debacle of incredibly poor communication and broken promises, before my bed actually arrived. I’ve never been so frustrated with a company’s service in my entire life.
I will not name and shame them, but I will not give them any link-love, either. I just honestly can’t recommend them and would hate for anyone else to have a similar experience due to a source that I’ve passed on.
On the other hand, we are loving our new King-sized mattress. I talked all about it in my last post. It’s a “bed-in-a-box” style, which was a new experience for me, but I’ve been super impressed by the comfort, quality and price point.
Apart from the bed itself, one of the biggest changes I made was switching to an all-white colour palette for the bedding.
I wanted to calm things down in this room, and I knew all-white would feel so much fresher and more airy.
I found the white linen doona cover at a Pillow Talk store-closing-down clearance, where I snagged it for a tiny fraction of the full retail price. There’s nothing like real linen to bring a sense of casual luxury to a space.
White cushions with jute edging add a beachy vibe, while the little lumbar pillows were perfect with their subtle gold print – just enough to create a hint of textural interest, without making the styling feel busy or overdone.
The other main change was the addition of a wooden bead chandelier beside the bed.
I picked up this chandelier in Bali on a girl’s trip last year. They are so cheap over there! I love the texture and warmth of those wooden beads.
There’s actually no light fitting on this side of the bed, and I didn’t want to spend the money to wire one in. So the chandelier is purely decorative.
I “swagged” the chain by adding a second hook a short distance away, because I’ve always loved a swagged chandelier – it feels kind of artsy and decadent to me.
I really like how the bedside tables look less matchy-matchy now that we don’t have the same lamp on either side.
On the other side of the bed, I switched things up by placing a new print behind the existing lamp. Well, it’s not technically new, I just moved it from elsewhere in the house.
A faux plant adds to the tropical vibe in our Boho beachy bedroom. A bit of greenery always brings life to a space.
So that’s it – our new Boho beachy bedroom! I hope you like what we’ve done in this room! We’re really enjoying the change and certainly loving having a King-sized bed at last.
It finally feels like a real parents’ retreat, with a calm and serene vibe that makes it feel like we’re on holiday at home. Now if only there was a housekeeper to make my bed every day so it would always look this nice…?
Tell me, are you a “make the bed in the morning” person? Any tricks for someone like me who rises earlier than my husband? I can’t make the bed with him still in it. And once I’m up and I’ve gotten busy with the school morning routine, I don’t ever seem to get back to it. Send help! I need an intervention. Ha!
Looks lovely! I’d just get really sad without a lamp by my bedside. Haha, perhaps you’re hiding a reading light in the drawer? Most mornings I manage to get my bed made fairly early. It’s not as pretty as yours, but it sure looks a lot better made than unmade! On the days that you stay at home, perhaps you can hook making the bed onto some other habit? For instance, If you regularly have a mid-morning coffee, maybe you can ‘train’ yourself to always go back and make the bed before indulging in that little treat. Or perhaps you should create a new daily treat just so you can hook making the bed onto it! As for days when you leave while hubby is still in bed, well, I’m sure he can be trained as well š
That’s a good idea, Monique! I could definitely do that on the one day when I’m still at home. No coffee until the bed is made! I like it!
It’s a bit trickier on school mornings because I leave for work at the same time as the kids (7:30am). I need to find a habit that falls earlier in the schedule, but not too early. Perhaps when I get dressed I can “dress” the bed as well. ?Hubby is usually up by then, so that could work! Thanks for helping me chew this over!
I agree about the lamp, it’s a must-have for me! That’s why my side still has one. Hubby never used to use his lamp – I constantly found it unplugged so he could plug in some device or other. I can’t remember him switching it on even once in the last four years. But then he’s never been one to read in bed. So this arrangement seems to work well for us. ?
Ha! This just reminded me that I always get frustrated when I need to use the lamp on my husband’s side and (always) find that it is not plugged in! No need for a lamp when watching movies in bed, grrrr!
Good idea to “dress” the bed as well! š
Haha, that is so funny! Husbands everywhere are just the same! ??
So pretty! What a treat to sleep there every night!
Thank you Sam! We really do love it!
Room looks amazing!!!!! Loving the colours and the chandelier is so beautiful! I used to live in Bali, fell in love with it when I was travelling around South-East Asia.
Its true, you can find so many beautiful things that costs so much less! And its important to support the local community of artists of all kind!
You really did amazing job with this room Karen!
So happy for you, keep on doing what you do best!!
???
Oh thank you so much Maria, that is such a kind comment! You absolutely made my day! xo P.S. How fun that you used to live in Bali! I loved our trip there!
Hi, I love the room. I can’t find in your post about the wall behind the bed. Is it wall paper?
Yes, it’s wallpaper! All those sources are in the post with the original room makeover, here: https://www.ahousefullofsunshine.com/2016/09/room-reveal-master-bedroom/
What a beautiful space! It looks like being on vacation every day! Your designs are always so inspirational.
There always seems to be a debate for lighting for a master bedroom….ceiling fan vs. chandelier. You found a way to have both!
With re-doing our master bedroom, I have heart eyes for gorgeous chandeliers but don’t know if I can convince the hubby to change out the practical ceiling fan. I’ll just have to find some new gorgeous lights for the nightstands!
Now that is good thinking!! A ceiling fan is a must in our hot climate – but putting the chandelier in a corner is a good compromise and still looks pretty. It would be nice over a reading nook as well š
So pretty, Karen! Great job creating a calming spot. I love the bed š
Thank you lovely Shelly! xoxo
